Oral Pathology

Oral and maxillofacial pathology Canberra OMFC Deakin, Dr Ragu Krishnamoorthy

What is Oral Pathology?

Oral and maxillofacial pathology encompasses a wide spectrum of conditions ranging from lumps, white patches, ulcers, cysts, benign and malignant tumours and much more. These conditions can arise for a number of reasons varying from viral infections to genetic predispositions.

What will treatment involve?

Dr Ragu will take a thorough history and do a full comprehensive head and neck examination. He may need to take a biopsy of the area to get a diagnosis. The biopsy tissue will be sent to a pathology centre where it will be analysed, and based on these results we will be able to provide you with a diagnosis and institute the appropriate treatment.

What does the surgery involve?

The biopsy can be potentially performed under a local anaesthetic and then once a diagnosis is attained a definitive treatment plan can be instituted. For some conditions, surgery may not be needed at all.

Where will I have my surgery?

Depending on the nature of the condition, surgery can be performed at Canberra OMFC. If general anaesthetic is required, it will be performed in a private hospital in Canberra.
